The conscious mind, the one with which you are reading and understanding this very sentence, is only a small part of the whole of you as an energy being. The whole is you is a composite of your physical and energy aspects. But the energy of us is actually the greater of the two types of substances. The invisible parts of us, our cells and their organelles and the protons and electrons that make us up, has, in the past century become believable largely due to technological advancement’s application in biological research. But it’s time for our minds to take us to the next level of acceptance; believing that which we can only sense and may not in the near future be able to prove with the scientific method and technology.
The body-mind connection, I have come to learn, is the connection between the physical stuff of the body (the molecules and minerals that make up our muscles, organs and bones) and the energetic parts of us such as spirit, soul, emotions, and thoughts. The interface has a physical counterpart called fascia. It is the fascia is surrounds most of the substances be it groups of molecules that make up a muscle fiber or an organ. In Chinese Medicine, the fascial system is considered the information highway of the body. Information passes nearly faster than the speed of light on this highway. So when you sustain an injury that doesn’t heal correctly it is because there is something stuck in the interface between body and the spirit/emotions/thoughts parts of you. Or when you have a illness which is not resolving—even if it is commonplace for one to have a chronic disease—there is something stuck in the body-mind connection. Yes, even the aging process and the symptoms we attribute to age can have hidden messages in the body-mind connection.
It is that “something” that if left unresolved can act like the pebble in the center of a snowball that as it rolls down the hill through time will grow bigger and bigger. This means more and more inflammation and more and more symptoms.
And so you go to your massage therapist and have myofascial release and acupuncture treatments and massage therapy of all kinds and you go and talk to a psychotherapist about “the event” but the area is still stuck and causing pain with growing symptomatology that may, or may not, appear to be connected to the original injury. These forms of treatment are very important in the healing process but after you have talked it out and rubbed it out enough, why doesn’t it go completely away? Or maybe it goes completely away for a little while and then suddenly it is back.
This is because the brain and body need a process that focuses on, clarifies, sorts out and then releases the area. Such a process must be based upon how the brain created the patterns in the first place in order to assist the brain and body-mind connection to unravel and de-fuse the “stuck” area in the interface between the stuff and energy parts of us. The part of the brain most involved in this process of pattern keeping is called the gnostic area or common integrative area. It is the part of the brain located in the left parietal and temporal lobes which receives input from all sensory association areas and stores complex memory patterns associated with sensation.
This part of our brain is actually designed to keep you increasingly in “safe mode” which means that we often become blind to new choices and possibilities for change. It’s job is to keep you in pain because of fear of more pain. Sounds counterproductive? It is. It is the culprit in our getting stuck in our ways as we age. It is also the culprit when we cannot end a physical pain pattern. It is mostly concerned with our survival, not happiness, joy and peace or our ability to thrive. Most of the time, it’s definition of fear and what to fear is inaccurate in terms of how to create and make new choices to create more of what we want in life. It becomes stronger and stronger as we become chronologically older; the snowball of past pain growing larger as we get older.
Consequently, as we talk through a past pain event, our brains do not access the non-conscious or fascial interface where the memory of the event is stored and all of it’s connections to the brain’s gnostic are. Instead talking about the event without any particular process or system in use, activates areas of the brain that actually keeps the all the subconscious messages about the event further suppressed.
Talk therapy while useful to intellectually process and attempt to understand what has happened and why it happened, but doesn’t do too much to locate all of the associated sensory areas and unravel the event from a pattern keeping standpoint. I am certain that you have experienced this. Someone asks you to explain what happened and all the memories and emotion flood into your brain and body and the tears begin to flow as if the even was occurring all over again.
The brain’s process of storing the memory is complex and requires a system or process designed to work with, rather than against, it’s natural tendency, to unravel and reset it. When you restore order within the brain and body-mind connection and then remember a past painful event you will recall the details of the event without the stressful feelings that were once part of the memory. You will also be able to have the much needed perspective on the why’s and how’s of the event that inevitably shed light on current circumstances with answers that will make changes easier.
Every past pain event has a purpose for us. If it causes us pain it does so to get our attention on some subject that is subconscious. Once we resolve the all the tentacles of the event and it’s connection to our past, DNA, present and future, the fascial interface will release it.
John Barnes, Physical Therapist, has discovered the same thing I have from decades of working with his client’s and their fascial systems. In response to his clients who said, ‘I thought I had already dealt with that’…he said:
“Well, they probably had, at least on the intellectual level. We’re all good at that, but it’s not enough. A complete resolution will only occur once you feel the emotions that were associated with that person or event and release all of those stored memories. Time doesn’t take care of emotional wounds; it covers them up with fascial adaptive layer upon fascial adaptive layer. This is why over time we all solidify and all these physical symptoms manifest themselves.”
I hear this from my clients, especially new clients, now and then. The answer is you did deal with it, on the conscious, intellectual level. The iceberg only shows us its tip above the water but there is so much more to it under the water. It is the same for us. There is a whole world of dialogue of thoughts and feelings underneath the symptom that keeps bugging you no matter what you do to it physically or intellectually. These thoughts and feelings have long been suppressed. When we liberate these non-conscious, non-thinking parts of our body or mind the interface between them is freed and the pain or symptom vanishes.
